Frustrated 35-year-old plumber Isaac Sullivan believes he has both the intellect and skill to be a surgeon. I thoroughly enjoyed Exit Papers from Paradise! For all the right (and wrong) reasons, I completely related to Isaac. Sometimes we feel stuck and I've been there, but whether we're a plumber, a doctor, 21 or 95, there will be moments in our lives where we wondered what could have been if we had taken a different path.
I hesitated for a few pages; the first 30 or so pages can make or break a book! And then find myself totally involved with Isaac! His imagination, hopes and dreams engage the reader, leaving the occasional uncertainty, a whisper of doubt did he really wreck.....well did he? Maybe there will be more to come......I hope so! A good read!
WOW, this is a wonderful first novel - great story, engaging characters, evocative conversations, exceptional use of metaphor & structurally tight... interesting `spiritual' component as well. Very entertaining... 'a real page-turner'.
His internal monologue is the star, and is unlike anything I've ever read before. Outside his head though, the small-town feel is palpable, and is obviously driving him nuts. At some point we've all wanted to toss it all and chase our dream, and it's great to follow such a genuine character through the personal transformation it kicks off.
This has to be one of the funniest, quirkiest books about a funny, quirky character that I've ever read. Isaac is a plumber in Paradise, Michigan but he really wants to be a surgeon. After high school, he dutifully took over his father's plumbing business, but he's been dreaming about attending the University of Michigan as the first step toward becoming a surgeon. For many reasons, he's been afraid to actually apply to college, but he has been busy conducting surgery on animals, reading medical journals, and carrying on an intense internal dialogue. It's this internal dialogue that really helped me connect with Isaac, see him as more than just plain weird, care about his character, and care about what happens to him. My internal dialogue was screaming, “NO, NO, NO!” at the end, but I don't think Liam Card could have ended it any other way.
A great read from the beginning to the end. Can't wait for Card's next book. An excellent story of life not going as planned.
An excellent debut novel with a writing style that allows you to connect to the main character like no other book I've read. Equal parts sad, funny, hopeful and awkwardly uncomfortable, you'll find yourself rooting for Isaac. The plethora of medical and cultural references also add to the intrigue that is Exit Papers from Paradise!
Very different, and very interesting ... and sad.
